Instagram has renamed its AI persona label to 'AI-generated profile' and tied it to the recommendations algorithm: profiles featuring an AI-generated person without the label will be treated as non-recommendable, limiting their reach and monetization. The tag replaces 'AI creator,' the label Instagram launched in May, when the company said applying it would have no effect on content distribution. Instagram frames the change as a response to user complaints. "We've heard that people don't like seeing a profile that seems human, only to find out later that the person featured is AI-generated," the company said. Creators who use AI tools to produce content but present as themselves are exempt from the new label.

Brand safety exposure follows directly from Meta's own track record on the platform: reports from Wired, The New York Times and The Guardian each documented AI-generated personas posing as human creators, including accounts that promoted a dating app and health supplements without disclosing their AI-generated nature. Meta's definition of original content treats AI-generated personas the same as human creators, so the reach restriction rewards labeling while leaving those accounts eligible for monetization. Media buyers running influencer or creator campaigns on Instagram gain a clearer signal to check before a partnership goes live, though verifying a creator's human status still falls on the agency vetting the account.
