Trade Desk stock jumps 21% on reports of ad talks with OpenAI's ChatGPT

A 21% stock jump lifted The Trade Desk to $30.32 on Thursday morning, after reports emerged that the company is in talks with OpenAI to sell advertising time on ChatGPT. OpenAI, which began adding ads to the platform in February, is building its own ad-technology operations, according to a report in The Information, and announced a partnership with Criteo this week to work with new advertisers.
A partnership would give agencies buying through Trade Desk's automated systems a new advertising channel, ChatGPT's roughly 910 million users, at a moment when analysts have watched Amazon DSP as a growing competitor to Trade Desk. Trade Desk has spent years arguing for an "open internet" marketplace over "walled garden" operators including Google and Meta, and inventory on OpenAI's platform would test how far that pitch extends. Some analysts say a deal would dramatically expand Trade Desk's revenue, though the company has not confirmed that talks are underway.
