Google, Microsoft and OpenAI all tightened advertiser bid controls this week, with Google's rollout pushing budget-capped Search and Performance Max campaigns toward stated target CPA or ROAS. Azira and Adobe launched cross-border footfall attribution in Adobe DSP across APAC, while eight streamers including Netflix, Disney and YouTube backed AudienceProject to build Australia's first cross-media measurement. Reddit's ChatGPT citation share collapsed more than 86% in four days.
Azira and Adobe bring cross-border footfall attribution to Adobe DSP, live first in APAC
Azira, the Pasadena-based location data company, partnered with Adobe on August 25, 2026 to bring cross-border footfall attribution into Adobe Advertising DSP, live now in the Asia-Pacific market. The integration lets a campaign served in one country confirm store visits it produced in another, using 22 measurement macros built into every pixel with no separate vendor tag required. The arrangement runs through Adobe Global, a structure that supports future expansion to additional markets, including the United States, though Azira and Adobe have disclosed no dates or country list for that rollout. The launch use case is tourism, where media bought in one country aims to produce arrivals in another. Azira says the same pixel can extend to other verticals that drive people to physical locations, naming education, retail and quick-service restaurants as examples without committing to a sequence. Neither company disclosed the attribution window, dwell time threshold or match rates behind the APAC deployment.
VFC taps AudienceProject to build Australia's first cross-media measurement, live 2027
Eight streaming platforms in Australia, including Amazon Prime, Disney Advertising, Foxtel Media, Netflix, Samsung Ads, SBS, Vevo and YouTube, have joined the Video Futures Collective in backing AudienceProject to build an independent cross-media measurement system. The system is expected to go live from early 2027, applying a single independent methodology across competing services to give advertisers one consistent view of reach and frequency. Each platform will supply census-level campaign impression data, while AudienceProject establishes an opt-in Australian audience panel to determine demographics and deduplicate audiences across services. Six of the eight VFC members already use AudienceProject in other markets, a factor the organisation expects to speed up the local rollout. VFC interim chief executive Toby Dewar said advertisers and agencies have shown "a strong appetite for a solution like this." Individual VFC members still need to finalise their own commercial agreements before joining the system.
Yandex tests shoppable advertising on smart TVs via QR-code product cards
Yandex is testing a shoppable advertising format on connected TVs, according to Kommersant. Viewers currently scan a QR code with a smartphone to reach a product page, since Yandex Direct already lets advertisers attach product cards with QR codes to CTV video ads. The company is considering a version that lets users complete checkout directly through the TV interface. Market participants estimate the format could cost advertisers 10-15% more than standard CTV placements at launch, with pricing around 250-400 rubles per thousand impressions. Analysts expect early demand to come from large retailers, e-commerce players, and FMCG and fashion brands, while adoption stays limited until the extra smartphone step disappears. Russia's CTV ad market reached 15.5 billion rubles in 2025 and could grow 30-35% more in 2026.
Reddit's ChatGPT citation share falls more than 80% in days, PromptWatch finds
PromptWatch data shows Reddit citations in ChatGPT Search fell by more than 86% over a four-day period, dropping from an average 3.83% share of all ChatGPT citations, the highest of any platform, to under 1% within a day. Petra Labs recorded a similar decline of about 80% and noted citations of YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok also fell over the same window. Reddit continues to appear as usual in Google's AI Overviews and Gemini, according to Boldspace's head of consumer Lou Kelly, who said the pattern reflects a change in ChatGPT's own source selection while Reddit's relevance to AI answers overall remains intact. A similar collapse happened in September 2025, when Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations fell from 14% to 2% and its stock price dropped 10% before recovering. The cause remains unconfirmed, with theories including Reddit-OpenAI licensing talks and Reddit's crackdown on spam.
CIMM paper flags fragmentation discount and risk premium in sports TV measurement
The Coalition for Innovative Media Measurement (CIMM) has published a paper, 'Keeping the Score: Industry Perspectives on Innovations in Sports Media Measurement,' that identifies nine persistent challenges in sports audience measurement, including cross-platform fragmentation, unauthorised streaming, sponsorship valuation and outcome measurement. The paper warns that incomplete cross-platform measurement can create a 'fragmentation discount' that pushes advertising pricing down, and that low confidence in current metrics generates a 'measurement risk premium' that skews how sports rights are valued. CIMM Managing Director Jon Watts frames sports as the proving ground for the future of media measurement, given the scale of financial stakes and the fragmentation of distribution. The paper outlines emerging solutions including hybrid panel-plus-big-data architectures, identity-enabled deduplication and advanced sponsorship analytics, and it examines the rise of AI and synthetic currencies that blend observed viewer behaviour with modeled estimates.
CeraVe, AT&T, CarMax and Oura marketers now measure brand 'fandom'
Marketing executives are chasing 'fandoms' as the next lever for building brand awareness and loyalty, agency leaders told Digiday. Alice Woo, chief creative officer at New Engen, said fandom is where attention turns into identity, giving brands a stronger pull than simple awareness or affinity. Creative Theory Agency co-founder and CEO Tamon George said fandom today is far broader than before, built across communities that reach beyond geography and legacy categories. Brands measure fandom differently: CeraVe tracks engagement, appetite for content, awareness among new audiences and sales lift, per svp of marketing Jasteena Gill. CarMax CMO Sarah Lane measures fandom through awareness. AT&T measures fandom through brand perception and consideration, then tracks effects like purchase intent or customer acquisition over time, said avp of sponsorships and experiential Sabina Ahmed. Linear and streaming sports TV ad spend combined is expected to grow by $5.3 billion through 2030, according to eMarketer.
YouGov: Gen Z now discovers products via influencers at 41%, TV at just 19%
Social media influencers and bloggers are now the top-two product discovery channel for Gen Z, cited by 41% of that generation according to YouGov Profiles data, nearly matching search engines at 42%. Across all US adults the figure drops to 27%, placing influencers ninth among discovery routes, well behind recommendations from friends, family or colleagues at 51% and retail browsing at 44%. The generational gap with traditional TV is stark: only 19% of Gen Z discover new products through TV or radio commercials, while 41% cite influencers. Baby Boomers+ show the opposite pattern, with 41% citing TV or radio commercials and just 13% citing influencers. MrBeast holds the highest positive rating among measured influencers at 34%, followed by Marie Kondo at 32%. The data comes from YouGov Profiles surveys collected between June 2025 and June 2026, weighted to be nationally representative of US adults 18 and older.
BrightEdge: Google AIO cites 40 seconds of YouTube video, ChatGPT cites the whole clip
BrightEdge found that half of queries citing a YouTube URL in Google's AI Overviews point to a specific timestamp inside the video, with the citation covering about 40 seconds of footage. OpenAI's ChatGPT cites YouTube videos less often. When it does cite one, it selects the entire video and places the citation closer to a viewer's purchase decision, said BrightEdge CEO Jim Yu. Ecommerce videos were cited 32.3% of the time, followed by finance at 27.5%, restaurants at 25.8%, education at 24.3%, B2B at 23.2% and insurance at 22.4%. Short-form videos appear in AI Overviews citations 17.5% of the time. BrightEdge fielded the data from May 17 to August 2, 2026, tracking Google AIO and ChatGPT citations by URL type and purchase-intent stage. Yu said manually uploaded transcripts and chapters decide whether a video earns a citation. Automatic captions carry no weight in that decision.
Cossa op-ed: a ROAS of 4 can still be a loss until it hits the P&L
Marketing consultant Alexander Sosnovsky argues in a Cossa.ru column that a ROAS of 4 tells owners nothing about profit until the channel is run through a profit and loss statement. His example: 1 million rubles in revenue at ROAS 4 loses 55% to cost of goods, then 250,000 rubles to ad spend, leaving 200,000 rubles before returns, logistics, marketplace commissions and card processing fees are deducted, at which point the channel turns negative. Sosnovsky sets the break-even ROAS at 4-5 for a 25% margin business and at 2 for a 60% margin business. In one case, a building materials manufacturer's owner wanted to scale a growing category; Sosnovsky found falling margin inside it and blocked the expansion. Across the project, cost per lead fell by half, leads grew 2.3 times and ROI passed 300%.
Google, Microsoft and OpenAI narrow advertiser bid controls in the same week
Google began a gradual rollout on August 17, 2026 that moves budget-capped Search, Shopping, Performance Max, Demand Gen and Travel campaigns toward their stated target CPA or ROAS. Campaigns that previously spent their full daily budget at a lower actual cost now drift toward that stated target, and Google says it will not change the targets or budgets themselves. Microsoft Advertising will stop accepting a maximum cost per click on new non-portfolio campaigns built on Max Conversions, Max Conversion Value or Max Clicks starting October 1, 2026; existing campaigns and portfolio bid strategies keep the field. OpenAI made Maximize results, an automated bidding strategy, the default for new ad groups in ChatGPT Ads Manager Beta. Advertisers can still select Manual: Max bid at each ad group, since no account-level default exists.
