Reddit's ChatGPT citation share falls more than 80% in days, PromptWatch finds

Since around the 10th of the month, Reddit's visibility in ChatGPT search answers has fallen sharply, says Boldspace head of consumer Lou Kelly. PromptWatch measured a drop of more than 86% in Reddit citations over four days, with Reddit's share of ChatGPT citations, previously the highest of any platform at an average 3.83%, falling under 1% within a single day. Petra Labs recorded a similar decline of about 80% and found that citations of YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and TikTok also fell over the same window. Reddit saw a near-identical collapse in September 2025, when its share of ChatGPT citations dropped from 14% to 2% and its stock price fell 10% before recovering.

Reddit's advertising revenue rose 74% year-over-year to $664m in Q1 2026 and 64% to $762m in Q2, evidence of how much marketing spend has chased AI visibility on the platform. Some of that spend went toward content built purely to earn ChatGPT citations, including fake accounts created to seed threads so official brand accounts could reply, a tactic marketing strategist Jordan Stevens says worked unevenly and drew scrutiny from Reddit's moderators. Bans on promotional posts and warnings from communities suggest platforms and the AI systems citing them are growing more selective about which content counts as trustworthy. Kelly recommends brands use Reddit to answer real questions and add genuine expertise, since a citation earned through manufactured content carries less durability than credibility built through real participation in a community's conversation.
