Meta alumni fill senior ad roles at OpenAI, Amazon Ads, TikTok and Roku

Rolling layoffs and repeated reorganizations at Meta have pushed senior ad talent toward rival platforms, AdExchanger reports. OpenAI hired Fidji Simo, a former Facebook product leader, as CEO of its artificial general intelligence unit more than two years before launching ads in February; she stepped down over the summer for health reasons but stays on as an advisor. OpenAI's head of global ad solutions, David Dugan, and its VP of monetization, Benji Shomair, each spent about a dozen years building Facebook's ad business before joining. Amazon Ads put former Meta VP Kelly MacLean in charge of DSP product and engineering. TikTok has hired VP of product David Kaufman and former sales lead Blake Chandlee from Meta, and counts roughly 700 ex-Meta employees on staff. Roku named Patrick Harris, who spent nearly a dozen years at Meta and two years at Snap, as SVP of advertising and partnerships this spring.
Buying interfaces on OpenAI, Amazon Ads and TikTok increasingly mirror Meta's ad manager, so planners already trained on Facebook and Instagram campaigns face a shorter learning curve as budgets shift toward these platforms. Roku and other CTV programmers are betting the same self-serve model can pull in mid-market advertisers who have stayed away from television's high production costs and buying complexity. Pinterest's experience with Meta hires in 2012, under president Tim Kendall, shows the approach pays off when a platform's growth actually tracks Facebook's trajectory; several of those early hires eventually returned to Meta.
