The Drum: billboards now trigger AI search, per a Leeds price-comparison test

Two 48-sheet billboards placed side by side on York Street in Leeds contrasted an existing quoted price for the same site, a stunt an agency CEO cites in a Drum Network op-ed as proof that outdoor creative can generate a second life online. People photographed the boards and publications picked up the story, turning a physical placement into digital content. The piece argues that OOH now feeds a longer consumer path: billboard sighting, curiosity, a search or an AI prompt to ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity, discovery of the company's website and reviews, an AI-generated answer, then an action such as a website visit or purchase.
Campaigns built only for reach and recall risk losing the second half of that journey if a brand's website, reviews and press coverage do not hold consistent, verifiable information for AI systems to retrieve. Planners who ask what question a billboard will provoke, and whether the answer engine can find accurate material to answer it, gain a channel that traditional reach and frequency metrics do not capture. The op-ed frames real-world triggers as more valuable as AI search grows, since AI answers questions from a screen while a brand's physical placement reaches someone walking down a high street.
