Cross-Screen Measurement
Cross-screen measurement combines linear TV, connected TV (CTV) and streaming viewing into one deduplicated audience count, so reach and frequency can be reported on a single comparable scale instead of as separate per-screen numbers. It matches exposures across devices to the same person or household using panel data, set-top box or smart-TV data, and login-based identity from streaming apps. The output is a unified reach/frequency curve that shows genuine incremental reach across screens, not the sum of each screen's reach.
Worked example
A campaign targeting adults 18-49 in a 5.4M-population market delivers 2,400,000 unique contacts on linear TV, 850,000 on CTV, and 500,000 on streaming (BVOD), summing to 3,750,000 screen-level contacts. Running the same audience through a cross-screen dedup panel returns 2,950,000 unique individuals reached, meaning 800,000 contacts (21% of the summed total) were counted on more than one screen. The planner reports 2,950,000 as campaign reach, not 3,750,000, and flags that CTV is adding proportionally less incremental reach than its raw number suggests.
How it is used
Planners use cross-screen dedup output to set frequency caps across the full plan and to judge whether CTV or streaming spend is buying incremental reach or just piling frequency onto viewers already reached on linear TV. The framework depends on match rates between data sources, which are rarely 100%, so the deduplicated number carries a confidence interval that shrinks as sample or panel size grows. The common mistake is treating each screen's reach as additive when pitching or reporting a plan, which inflates delivery and misleads the client on how many people were actually reached.
