wTRP (Weighted Target Rating Point)

wTRP is a Target Rating Point rescaled by a spot-length weighting index, so TRPs delivered by 10", 15", 20" and 30" spots can be summed on one common scale, normally a :30-equivalent. A planner uses it to turn a schedule with mixed spot lengths into a single comparable delivery figure before calculating cost per point.

Formula

wTRP = TRP x (spot length index / 30" index), summed across all spot lengths in the schedule

Worked example

A campaign in the Czech market runs three spot lengths against women 18-49: 30" spots deliver 50 TRP (index 1.00 = 50.0 wTRP), 20" spots deliver 40 TRP (index 0.70 = 28.0 wTRP), and 10" spots deliver 30 TRP (index 0.30 = 9.0 wTRP). Total weighted delivery is 50.0 + 28.0 + 9.0 = 87.0 wTRP against a raw TRP sum of 120. At a negotiated budget of 43,500 EUR, CPP on the raw TRP total looks like 362.50 EUR, but CPP on the 87.0 wTRP is 500 EUR, the real price per point once spot length is accounted for.

How it is used

Buyers use wTRP instead of raw TRP to compute CPP when negotiating with a channel or agency, because a station can hit its raw TRP target cheaply by loading the schedule with 10" spots while charging as if delivery were on 30"s. The same index blends TRPs across dayparts of different clutter and attention value, using a daypart coefficient alongside the length coefficient. Practitioners often apply the sales house's own weighting table without checking it against the agency's or market's standard index, since 10"/15" coefficients vary by market and are a routine point of negotiation.

The common mistake

Never price or compare a schedule on raw TRP totals when spot lengths are mixed, always sum to weighted wTRP on a common :30-equivalent first.
