Pharmaceutical marketing is one of the few categories in which a terminal business outcome, a filled prescription, gets recorded by a third party through payer claims, and script lift joins that ledger to an impression log. Vendors distinguish three prescription counters: TRx, total prescriptions including refills, NRx, new prescriptions only, and NBRx, new-to-brand patients, all named in the patent DeepIntent was granted in June 2021. Studies compare an exposed group against a matched control on pre-period volume, specialty, geography and patient mix, then count prescriptions in a post-period window. Results vary widely: OptimizeRx reported a 4.07% absolute lift in prescribing for a chronic care therapy, with more than 16,000 incremental new prescriptions and over 1,100 newly activated writers, while a rare sleep disorder campaign produced a 44% absolute lift on a base of just 131 incremental new prescriptions and 98 new writers.

Script lift now functions as a gate on channel expansion: DeepIntent built a live sports package around it in June 2026, and point-of-care media is judged by the same standard. No Media Rating Council accreditation covers script lift as a metric, and most reported figures come from the platform that sold the media rather than an independent auditor. A Marketing Science study of fifteen randomised Facebook experiments covering 500 million user-experiment observations found observational methods like script lift generally overstated effects, with half the estimates wrong by a factor of three. IAB research from February 2026 found up to 75% of buy-side decision-makers rate attribution and incrementality methods as underperforming, a scepticism that extends directly to vendor-reported script lift numbers.
