ppc.world test: Sensor Tower and Apptica miss real app installs by up to 4.7x

Install estimates from Sensor Tower and Apptica missed real 2025 numbers by 1.58 to 4.69 times, ppc.world found after comparing both App Intelligence platforms against actual AppsFlyer data for one undisclosed app, with all figures scaled by a single coefficient under NDA terms. Sensor Tower's installs correlated with the real trend at 0.53 on the Pearson scale versus 0.44 for Apptica, whose numbers included spikes that contradicted AppsFlyer's own data. On monthly active users, Sensor Tower's average across iOS and Android came within 6% of the true figure, while Apptica's Android estimate ran 2.62 times off the actual number, despite a 0.87 correlation on month-to-month change. A follow-up check across five more apps, run without AppsFlyer data as a reference, found the two platforms' MAU estimates agreed closely for some apps and diverged by several million users for others.
Budgets built on install or audience counts from a single App Intelligence source risk running on numbers that miss the true scale by several multiples, even when the underlying trend line looks reliable. A campaign weighing a direct placement, such as the "Tsar Banner" format inside the Russian grocery app Pyaterochka, where Sensor Tower puts monthly active users at around 1 million on iOS and Android combined, gains more from cross-checking that figure against a second platform's trend data than from treating either number as fact. Teams comparing competitors' creative spend or category rankings get the most value from Sensor Tower and Apptica as directional signals for trend and share of voice, backed up by measured attribution data whenever exact figures matter.
