Study: Google AI Mode Prices Products 21.6% Higher Than Search Results

AI Mode priced identical products 21.6% higher than traditional Google search on average, according to a Productrise analysis of more than 2 million product listings and over 100,000 search results pages gathered between Aug. 9 and Aug. 31, 2026, in the U.S. and U.K. The ecommerce SEO firm entered identical shopping queries into AI Mode and standard search at the same moment on the same day, then compared prices when the same product showed up in both. Prices matched only 61.9% of the time; in the remaining 38.1%, AI Mode carried the higher price 68.4% of the time, with a median gap of 22.2% in those cases. AI Mode also returned far fewer results per query, an average of 3.9 products against 27.8 in traditional search, and just 1.28% of products ranking in traditional search turned up in AI Mode at all.

Retailers optimizing listings for Google's traditional price-ranked carousels get no guarantee of matching visibility or pricing in AI Mode, since the two surfaces pull from largely separate product pools and rank on different logic. Campaigns and creative built around price-comparison messaging need separate monitoring for each surface, since a product's price and rank in AI Mode can diverge sharply from what shows in standard search results. Google maintains both surfaces draw on the same Shopping Graph data and has not verified Productrise's findings, but the practical gap between what a shopper sees in each mode is already measurable.
