Of 1,200 paid TikTok ad campaigns examined by WPP, System1 and TikTok, 620 featured content creators, together generating 23.6 billion impressions. Researchers tested reactions among 182,500 TikTok users in eight markets, the US, UK, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Brazil and Mexico, measuring emotional response and attention capture against Brand Lift results. Standard brand ads matched or beat creator ads in most individual cases, while creator ads averaged a 23% higher brand recall lift overall, and results peaked when creative quality, creator fame and creator-brand fit combined, pushing recall lift to nearly four times the level seen in weak combinations. "Creator-brand fit is roughly twice as useful as fame, and audiences need to understand why this particular person is talking about this product more than how famous they are," WPP's researchers said.

Creator selection frameworks that weigh follower counts over category fit risk wasting budget: brand fit outweighs fame by roughly two to one in this data, and only 61% of creator ads placed a recognizable brand cue in the first two seconds. Media plans built around influencer partnerships gain most when the creator's role in the story is explained early and the brand appears fast, since recall gains required more than impression scale across the sample tested.
