IAB launches measurement standard for brand visibility in AI search platforms

ChatGPT's weekly active user base has passed 900 million, and Google AI Overviews now reaches more than 2.5 billion people a month, showing up in almost half of Google searches worldwide. Against that scale, the IAB has released 'Measuring Visibility in the AI Era,' a standardized framework for evaluating how brands appear in AI-powered discovery platforms including ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. The framework builds a common metrics hierarchy for AI visibility and sets directional standards to help organizations judge the quality of their data. It follows research showing brands recommended by ChatGPT were 2.5 times more likely to get a site visit within seven days than brands absent from its answers.
Media plans that shift budget toward search based on that data risk crediting a channel for capturing demand that AI discovery already created upstream. Agencies that adopt the IAB's visibility hierarchy will need to track brand mentions across ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity alongside branded search volume, direct traffic and conversion data, then run incrementality tests or marketing mix modeling to separate channels that create demand from channels that only capture it. Clients paying for last-touch dashboards should expect those numbers to undercount AI's contribution until agencies build that wider measurement stack.
