Sponsored-ad presence in hotel-related ChatGPT prompts climbed from 6% in March 2026 to 14% in April and 24% in May, according to Comscore's analysis of prompts with identified source links, a fourfold increase over three months. The finding accompanies a broader expansion of Comscore's AI Intelligence platform, which now detects paid placements inside AI chat responses alongside the organic citations it already tracks across ChatGPT and other assistants. The data comes from an opt-in panel that ties actual chat sessions, prompt and response pairs, cited domains and event timestamps, to downstream actions such as a website visit. Chief Technology and Analytics Officer Smriti Sharma said the tool is meant to show businesses "where a brand appears relative to competitors, how paid and organic visibility coexist, and whether that exposure ultimately translates into downstream consumer behavior." Comscore also cited CustomIQ data showing ChatGPT held about 69% of unique visitors among AI assistants in June 2026.

Media plans that treat AI citations as free earned exposure now compete against paid units bidding for the same conversational space, and a brand's absence from citation data no longer means absence from the response a consumer sees. Budgets built around hotel and travel keywords face a parallel contest inside ChatGPT, where Comscore's numbers show ad inventory in that category filling in roughly ninety days. Attribution tools that separate organic AI citation from paid AI placement will matter more as platforms expand sponsored inventory beyond the 31 European markets OpenAI added in August, since knowing which exposure drove a visit becomes as important inside chat interfaces as it already is in search.
