CloudBuying: 85% of Russian bank mentions on Telegram appear outside banks' own posts

Sberbank placed 811,795 Telegram posts carrying ERID advertising marks over the past year, and VTB placed 631,466, Brand Analytics data show. Sberbank's own placements account for just 2.5% of all mentions of its brand, and VTB's for 4.6%. The rest comes from partner posts, developers, car dealerships and credit brokers among them, that name the bank because Russia's advertising law No. 38 requires disclosure when financial services are promoted. CloudBuying's research puts the share of uncontrolled bank mentions at 85%, with much of that content running alongside discount aggregators, disaster news and 18+ material. Alfa-Bank breaks the pattern: it holds 111 million of its own placements against 132 million from partners. Telegram represents 43% of Russia's ad market, and financial services generate 12-14% of total ad volume on the platform, per Brand Analytics.

No brand safety standard exists in Russia to keep bank names out of low-quality or toxic placements, and the industry recommendations that could set one remain on paper. Agencies buying reach through Telegram partner networks on behalf of financial clients inherit that exposure: a bank's name can surface next to shock content or dubious deal channels without the brand or its agency ever booking the placement directly. Media planners on financial accounts have reason to audit where partner-driven mentions land, since partner posts generate the large majority of Telegram exposure for names like Sberbank and VTB, while the banks' own campaigns account for a small fraction of it.
